Graffiti artists continue to make the Yakima their canvas. Stricter laws and a
special paint-out program are helping, but city leaders want to step up the
fight against despicable designs. They want to keep potential paint tools
off-limits to juveniles. Stores would also eed to keep paint products in clear
view to avoid possible theft. hese added precautions are receiving mixed reviews
from business wners who hate to turn customers away. In the last year, more than
70 raffiti arrests have been made; the majority of them being juveniles.
Yakima's police chief, Sam Granato, feels it's time to take further action
before any more damage is done. Beer and wine are already monitored, so this is
some other regulation that would monitor the purchase of spray cans," says
Granato. The city council will further discuss these added graffiti guidelines
at tomorrow's meeting.
