(Fort Wayne-WANE, July 9, 2004) - One Fort Wayne resident woke up to find a nasty new paint job on the side of her house and garage.
The neighborhood, just off of Calhoun Street on the south side of Fort Wayne, really does seem quiet -- that's why it was so shocking to wake up and find a graffiti mural scrawled across these walls.
"I'm concerned. I'm concerned because there's a lot of kids in the neighborhood," said Lanette Robinson, who lives across the street from the home. "There's a lot of new renters in the neighborhood, too."
"There's no parties here, there' no reason for this, it had to be random -- and it's just one gang is giving a message to another is all I can figure out from what the police said," she said.
One friend of the family claimed many of the symbols -- broken stars, an upside-down king, all painted in red -- are symbols used by Chicago gangs. He also declined to be named, but did say that he thought the symbols were so inflammatory that they had to have painted by teenagers who didn't appreciate their significance.
Officers working the case were unable to comment today..the department did offer some advice for victims of this type of crime.
"Talk with your liaison officers, your neighborhood association presidents--keep them informed as to any suspicious activity or people in the neighborhood -- and document and report it," Officer Robin Thompson said today.
But the police department says the community as a whole has done a great job keeping graffiti to a minimum -- making this example standout all the more.
