E.C. police, youth center set graffiti abatement program

The El Centro Police Department and the city of El Centro youth center will stage a graffiti abatement program Saturday that will paint over graffiti in three El Centro city blocks Saturday.

El Centro police Detective Angie Cuevas said Officer Randy Maupin organized the event and donations of paint and painting supplies were made by various businesses.

The businesses include Home Depot, Pittsburgh Paint and Wal-Mart. Max Foods donated snack and beverages that will be consumed by GAP volunteers. The volunteers include Maupin and other El Centro police officers, AmeriCorps members, City Councilman Raymond Casillas and city youth center recreation leader Gary Thompson.

The GAP will cover the 100 blocks of Southwind and Smoketree drives and the 200 block of Barrett Drive beginning at 8 a.m. Residents will not be charged for GAP services.

Those wanting to have graffiti on their property painted over in future GAP operations can sign up by calling 352-2113.
