Graffiti vandal escapes jail sentence

A GRAFFITI vandal who attacked two off-duty cops has escaped a jail sentence.

Stuart Barrie turned on officers when they caught him writing on a building in the City, Southwark Crown Court heard. One of the police officers sprained his thumb.

Jobless Barrie, aged 31, of Avery Hill, New Eltham, fled but later was arrested with two spray cans, paint and a marker pen on August 18 last year.

He pleaded guilty to damaging property and having articles with intent to destroy or damage property. He was convicted of assault with intent to resist by a jury.

Judge Neil Stewart gave Barrie a 60-hour community punishment order on May 5.
