Police targetting graffiti artists

Edmonton - Eight people have been charged with mischief causing damage for spraying graffiti in Old Strathcona.

The arrests, made over the past few weeks, have been applauded by area business owners fed up with the tags.

"We are beginning to look like a war zone. The whole city has been hit with the graffiti and we have been hit pretty hard," Shirley Lowe, with the Old Strathcona Business Association, said, adding it has to be treated as a crime and not art.

She says the problem is compounded when they hit historic buildings, because there is the risk of damaging the structure when harsh chemicals are used to remove the paint.

The michief charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail.
