The purpose of the graffiti wall is to reduce the amount of vulgar and illegal spraypainting around the city, and provide artists with a safe, public area to show off their work.

The underside of this bridge over McVicar Creek was chosen by the legalized graffiti coalition. And the idea got a lot of support after it was spearheaded by former mayor Ken Boshcoff.

But that support is now wavering. Seniors living in nearby condominiums have expressed concerns about being intimidated by youths under the bridge. And some young mothers are also opposed to it.

Police chief Bob Herman says he doesn't want to influence city council, but some councillors wondered why city staff would approve a site which is so secluded, and with a narrow bicycle path running through it. Even with a different location, some on council say they're opposed to the idea altogether.

Council voted against allowing the bridge to become the graffiti wall site, and the coalition is now looking for a new one. Councillor Bill Scollie has offered up the back of his business, the Skihaus, for a possible alternative.
