Hanover County detectives tell 8News they have arrested one of the most prolific vandals in Central Virginia . 21 year-old Michael Broth has been charged with felony vandalism for graffiti on Interstate 295 in Hanover County .
Some may not think this is a big deal but there are an estimated 48 thousand cars that pass beneath the railroad bridge on I-295 each day that have to view his work. Police now tell us they have busted the man responsible and that is just the tip of the iceberg. While the suspected vandal has been busted for graffiti on I-295, he is believed to be behind many others outside the Virginia Center Commons on the side of a Clay Street warehouse.
Investigators tell us the Broth may be involved in graffiti, vandalism and highway overpasses in greater Richmond and points beyond. According to a list confiscated from a police raid on the suspect’s apartment, those points range from Washington , D.C. to Miami , Florida . Police tell us the suspect who is known as “refuse to be smart” in the graffiti world even has his own website detailing his work which he calls “exterior decorating.” Bob Bailey of the Hanover Association of Business says, “I’m thrilled, we’ve put immense money and effort into eliminating this problem.” Bailey heads the Hanover Business Association’s efforts to combat graffiti, he is thrilled by today’s arrest and he showed 8News an estimate to clean up the I-295 vandalism. It is over 10-thousand dollars.
The list of charges against the alleged vandal is growing and investigators in Hanover tell 8News that several more will be filed today. Not only does Michael Broth face a growing list of criminal charges, but the Hanover Business Association plan to file a civil suit seeking punitive damages.
