Graffiti - writing's on the wall
A young graffiti artist has appealed to the Chichecter District Council to
provide a wall or facility for him and his fellow artists.
In the meantime, Henry Carleff (16), a Chichester High School student uses his
bedroom walls as his 'canvas.
Henry was inspired by the legal graffiti in Brighton. He has approached
Chichester District Council several times to establish a legitimate graffiti
wall and eventually e-mailed the Chichester Observer.
He wrote: "I have noticed quite a few articles on graffiti in Chichester and the
huge budget that is spent on removing it," he said.
"I have spent a lot of time writing to the council with the suggestion of a
legal graffiti wall, however they will not even seem to consider it.
"I also know I am not the only young person who has suggested this to the
council but they still seem to ignore us. I first decided to contact them about
this about a year ago, after visiting Brighton and seen the amazing legal
graffiti walls there.
"I visited the council's online messageboard (which has since been shut down)
and left a message in the youth section describing how I thought a legal wall
would benefit the youth while at the same time deterring them from painting
illegally.
"After a week or so, another message was added, by a 20-year-old artist who
backed me up. He even offered to run a workshop there teaching aerosol art to
teenagers," said Henry.
The Observer also contacted the council and the answer was also a resounding
'no'.
