A Grand Rapids middle school turned into a target for vandals overnight.
Westwood Middle School on the city's northwest side was found covered with angry racial epithets and swastikas. The vandals didn't stop the school, and took their paint cans to the streets and tagged a car.
Early Saturday morning, Kyle Boynton couldn't believe his eyes. His blue four-door Chevy Lumina was now gray and black - completely covered bumper to bumper with spray paint and graffiti.
"Windshield, side windows, on that side," he said. "They got the wheels, the hood, the back."
The vandals were bold. The car was parked right in front of Kyle's parent's house. No one heard a thing.
"I'm very frustrated. I woke up and I'm like, come on, what a morning gift."
Kyle's car pales in comparison to the damage to nearby Westwood Middle School. On the doors, on the windows, and the walls, someone smeared racial slurs and sketched swastikas. There were references to Black people, Jews, and Asians.
The vandals were very methodical and very malicious, hitting all four corners of the building and leaving no area untouched. Even the schools new black top parking lot was partially covered with white paint.
"I think it's just random. I'm not too worried about it because bad stuff happens because there's bad stuff in the world," said Lindsey Boynton.
Grand Rapids Police have no leads and no witnesses, but they say based on some of the references to the school and some of the teachers that a group of former students may be responsible.
Kyle spent most of his morning doing some serious elbow work and thanks to a bottle of Graffiti Off, the car is close to clean again.
People who live near Westwood Middle School say this is not the first time cars have been vandalized, but they say usually the vandals use eggs, not spray paint, to damage cars.
If anyone knows who is responsible for the vandalism, you should call the Grand Rapids Police Department.
