A graffiti war is turning into a numbers game for two small towns and authorities are hoping to put an end to it.

In the last few months, people living in Hood River and White Salmon have seen many buildings get tagged and police said all the graffiti contains the vandals’ area codes.

The graffiti often has obscenities in it, but all of the taggings in White Salmon have the Oregon area code 541 in them, while the ones in Hood River include the Washington area code 509.

Hood River police said about 25 people have had to reach into their own pockets to pay for the damages to their homes and businesses.

Authorities said they’ve compiled a list of suspects and expect to make several arrests soon.

One officer said if any of the accused taggers caused more than $750 worth of damage, they could be looking at a felony charge.

Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.
