LOS ANGELES -- A man who fired on sheriff's deputies as they caught him
spray-painting a wall in the unincorporated City Terrace area was critically
wounded when they fired back, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
reported Tuesday. The shooting occurred at 11:59 p.m. Monday in the 1200 block
of North Herbert Ave., just north of the San Bernardino (10) Freeway, said
Deputy Bill Brauberger. The suspect, described only as a man, was spray-painting
a wall when deputies confronted him, he said. As they approached, the man
dropped the paint can, produced a handgun and fired at the deputies, Brauberger
said, adding that at least one round struck the rear window of their patrol
vehicle. Deputies fired back, hitting the man at least once in the upper body,
he said. The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition, he said.
No deputy was injured. The man's handgun was recovered at the scene, Brauberger
said. His name was not immediately released.
