Mayor not keen on rate rise to pay for vandalism
A high country shire Mayor says he will resist any moves to recover the costs of
antisocial behaviour from ratepayers.
The Local Government Association wants to increase rates to pay for cleaning up
graffiti and vandalism.
Vandals have hit the Snowy River Shire hard over the ski season, with the public
property bill reaching up to $6,000 a month.
But Mayor Richard Wallace says the problem is better solved through education.
"I believe it is more of a social issue and maybe we should be looking at
educating younger people, that it is just not the done thing to go around
damaging other people's properties," he said.
"I'd rather see the emphasis put on that rather than just solely collecting more
money off the ratepayers."
