Two juveniles responsible for spray-painting graffiti in the restrooms at South Connellsville's playground will have the opportunity to put their creativity to work.

Council unanimously approved a request by Mayor Pete Casini to have the two girls, who were caught vandalizing the restrooms, repaint them.

"I think that's a good lesson to learn and a good way to learn it," said Councilwoman Michelle Mattis.

Mattis said she is concerned because the restrooms, which are supposed to be locked, are left open at times. Casini said the restrooms are being locked.

According to Casini, the girls' parents agreed to have them paint the restrooms they defaced.

Casini said another ongoing problem at the playground is profanity and screaming by a group of youngsters who don't live in the borough.

"I banned about 50 kids from the playground," Casini said. "And not one of them was a borough resident."

In other matters, council:

  • Discussed several problems related to unnamed and unopened alleys and gave approval for Widmer Engineering to look into opening an alley on Oak Street, where a house is being built.

  • Approved use of the playground for bonfires by the football boosters on Sept. 27 and the Boy Scouts on Oct. 30.

  • Announced that fall cleanup in the borough will be Oct. 1.

  • Said police are addressing the problem of trucks speeding on Pittsburgh Street.
